ADHD in the Workplace

October is ADHD Awareness Month

This October, CADDAC is raising awareness about the impact of ADHD in the Workplace.

ADHD is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 7%-9% of children, 3%-5% of adults or 1.8 million Canadians. ADHD is highly hereditary and impacts people from all ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. ADHD impairs the brain's executive functioning, which creates challenges in one or more of the following areas: activation, focus, effort, emotion, memory, and action.

Did you know…

  • Adults with ADHD are 20% less likely to be steadily employed.
  • Those with ADHD earn an average of 16% less than their counterparts.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 3.5% of the workforce in 10 countries suffered from ADHD, resulting in 143 million days of lost production and an average of 8.4 excess sickness/absence days per year.
  • Those with ADHD were 61% more likely to have been fired, 33% more likely to be laid off, and 53% more likely to quit their job.
  • Employees with ADHD may be more susceptible to stress-related illness: one study reported that 24% of employees on longterm sick leave due to stress-related illness met the diagnostic criteria for ADHD.

Donate to CADDAC

Your donations help fund programs, support groups, and advocacy initiatives to raise awareness around adult ADHD and provide skills to those in need.

Research tells us that ADHD is rarely diagnosed as a stand-alone disorder. To feel your best, it can be really important to look at the big picture of your ADHD, your co-occurring conditions and symptoms and how both affect your lifestyle, relationships, learning, mental and physical health.
