Since many parents of students with ADHD have expressed concerns about their children returning to school during Covid, CADDAC has developed, Tips for Parents of Students with ADHD Returning to School During Covid to assist you. Below please find a letter template that you can use when writing your letter to the principal or other officials.

We are requesting information that will help us facilitate a smooth return to school and decrease any issues that may arise due to ___________’s disability.

I have listed our questions below. Receiving these answers quickly will help us prepare ___________ for changes to his/her environment and any additional rules. We also hope to be able to assist the school in anticipating ____________’s needs and proactively discussing possible interventions.

We are contacting you today to express our concern about our son/daughter ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­____________ returning to school during these stressful times. ____________struggles with impairments due to his/her ADHD. We have requested information that will help us facilitate a smooth return to school and decrease any issues that may arise due to ___________’s disability but have yet to receive any correspondence from __________’s principal (school or board).

I have listed our questions below. Receiving these answers quickly will help us prepare ___________ for changes to his/her environment and any additional rules. We also hope to be able to assist the school in anticipating ____________’s needs and proactively discussing possible interventions.

Questions

  1. What will ___________’s support level to be when returning to school? Can we expect additional resources?
  2. Will ___________’s environment be different from what she/he is used to? How?
  3. Will the schedule ___________ has become accustomed to be altered and will it remain consistent after being altered?
  4. Will ___________’s IEPs (and/or behavioural plan) be expanded to cover these unique circumstances? How?
  5. Will we be allowed to meet with the school to discuss possible issues that may arise and suggest potential strategies and supports?
  6. How will the school routinely share feedback on ___________’s well being and issues that arise?
  7. How will the school respond if ___________finds it challenging to follow the expected rules due to his/her ADHD (and other impairments)?
  8. Is exclusion an option the school might consider? When?
  9. Has the school board developed a policy to deal with these circumstances. If so, can you please send me a copy.
